THE LANGUAGE

Dhivehi of Addu dialect is the language spoken in  Maradhu island. Addu dialect is spoken only in Addu atoll in Maldives and is unique from the language which the Maldivians of other atolls speak. Divehi is only spoken in the Maldives, and belongs to the Indo-European family of languages

It has numerous loanwords from Tamil, Malayalam, Singhalese, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Portuguese and English. Although there are some dialect differences between the atolls, more pronounced in the four southernmost atolls, Dhivehi is spoken throughout the country.

AVEYLA

Aveyla Akuru is the oldest known script to have existed in the country. Its rounded characters bear a striking resemblance to medieval Singhalese and were written from left to right. Samples of this script could be seen in the old historical chronicles known as the Loamaafaanu.

DHIVES AKURU

Over time Aveyla Akuru evolved in to what is known as Dhives Akuru, which is also written from left to right. Examples of this script are to be found on old tombstones and other historical documents.

THAANA AKURU

Thaana is the script used in the Maldives as well as Maradhu island today. Written from right to left.It was introduced in the wake of the Portuguese occupation of the islands during the mid sixteenth century. The Thaana script has a total of twenty four letters, out of which nine are Arabic numerals to which phonetic values have been assigned. There is a set of long and short vowels which are placed above or below the consonants.
