THE LANGUAGEDhivehi of Addu dialect is
the language spoken in Maradhu island. Addu dialect is
spoken only in Addu atoll in Maldives and is unique from the
language which the Maldivians of other atolls speak. Divehi
is only spoken in the Maldives, and belongs to the
Indo-European family of languages
It has numerous loanwords from Tamil,
Malayalam, Singhalese, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Portuguese and
English. Although there are some dialect differences between
the atolls, more pronounced in the four southernmost atolls,
Dhivehi is spoken throughout the country.
AVEYLA
Aveyla Akuru is the oldest known script to
have existed in the country. Its rounded characters bear a
striking resemblance to medieval Singhalese and were written
from left to right. Samples of this script could be seen in
the old historical chronicles known as the Loamaafaanu.
DHIVES AKURU
Over time Aveyla Akuru evolved in to what is
known as Dhives Akuru, which is also written from left to
right. Examples of this script are to be found on old
tombstones and other historical documents.
THAANA AKURU
Thaana is the script used
in the Maldives as well as Maradhu island today. Written from right to left.It was
introduced in the wake of the Portuguese occupation of the
islands during the mid sixteenth century. The Thaana script
has a total of twenty four letters, out of which nine are
Arabic numerals to which phonetic values have been assigned.
There is a set of long and short vowels which are placed
above or below the consonants.
